The GIANT PORCUPINEFISH (called kokala or ‘o’opu
kawa) is the largest of all porcupinefish, with extra large eyes and head. Long backwards-pointing spines lie flat along
the entire body, erecting when the fish inflates. It’s a light fish covered with black
spots. They feed primarily on mollusks,
crustaceans and urchins. The Hawaiian
name for these fish means “spiny” and although some people think they’re safe
to eat, there have been accounts of people dying within the hour after eating
one of these. Come dive with Honu Hawaiian Diving to see
one of these fish!
