Golden Green Goby

The GOLDEN GREEN GOBY is almost always hiding in small crevices and holes, clinging upside down to the ceiling most times.  Its color ranges from orange-yellow to a greenish brown, and has darker bars ringing its body.  They grow to be about 2.5” in Hawaii.  This fish was thought to be endemic to Hawaii, but recently they were found in the Caroline Islands and Pohnpei.  Schedule a dive with Honu Hawaiian Diving and look for these upside down fish!

Some Hawaiian Endemic Facts...
The endemism rate for Hawaii 10 years ago was approximately 30%, meaning 30% of the fish found around the Hawaiian Island were native only to this area.  Today, however, it's closer to 25% due to new distribution records, such as with these Goby now migrating to other places.
Occasionally the percentage is boosted when a new endemic species is found or a previously known species divides into two regional species.  Hawaii is still the highest endemic state, with Easter Island close behind with a 22% endemism rate.
