Striped Mullet & Hawaiian Legend
The STRIPED MULLET (called ‘ama‘ama or ‘anae) is
the largest mullet fish, and holds a big part in Hawaiian ancient history. They are silver fish with faint stripes, and
have blunt snouts and have black on edges of their tails. Ancient Hawaiians had different names for
each stage of growth – pua’ama (finger length), kahaha (hand length), ‘ama‘ama
(8-12”) and ‘anae (full sized). Because
these fish were highly valued and saved especially for Hawaiian chiefs, overly
ambitious people were often warned “Don’t strive for ‘ama‘ama fish” meaning try
to be satisfied with what you have. Dive
with Honu Hawaiian Diving to find these special fish!
